Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday commemorated the 100th anniversary of the historic conversation between Sree Narayana Gurudev and Mahatma Gandhi, calling it a moment that gave “new direction” to India’s freedom movement and added deeper meaning to the vision of an independent nation.
Speaking at the centenary celebration held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, PM Modi described the 1925 meeting between the two spiritual giants as timeless and transformative.
“This was not just a meeting—it was a milestone that continues to inspire our pursuit of social harmony and national development even after a hundred years,” the Prime Minister said.
He praised Sree Narayana Guru’s ideals as a “guiding light” for those working for the betterment of society and underscored how such great personalities emerge in times of national turbulence to lead the country toward reform—spiritually and socially.
Reflecting on India’s global role, PM Modi highlighted the nation’s leadership in international initiatives such as “One Earth, One Health,” “One Sun, One World, One Grid,” and the G20 Summit theme of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” all rooted in the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family.
The event, organised by the Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust, brought together spiritual leaders and public figures to honor the enduring legacy of the 1925 dialogue, which took place at Sivagiri Mutt in Kerala. The conversation had focused on key issues such as the Vaikom Satyagraha, abolition of untouchability, non-violence, religious conversion, salvation, and the upliftment of marginalized communities.
Modi and other dignitaries also participated in ‘guru smarna’, a tribute to Sree Narayana Guru, reaffirming their commitment to the ideals of social justice, unity, and spiritual harmony that both he and Mahatma Gandhi upheld.
The Prime Minister concluded by asserting that the wisdom drawn from that historic meeting remains a source of strength for India’s path toward becoming a developed and harmonious nation.
